Zoffany's Jayarebe Digs Deep for Hampton Court Triumph

Iraj Parvizi's Listed Dee Stakes third Jayarebe (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}–Alakhana {Fr}, by Dalakhani {Ire}), who made an impressive black-type breakthrough in April's Listed Feilden Stakes, bounced back in style to secure a career high in Thursday's G3 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Jayarebe broke smartly from the outside gate, but was trapped wide in a prominent position before accepting a tow in a share of third. Looming large when taking closer order off the home turn, the 7-1 chance hit the front passing the quarter-mile marker and was driven out in the closing stages to withstand the late thrust of King's Gambit (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) by 3/4-of-a-length in game fashion.

“Sean [Levey] got him in a great position, he was able to get a breather in and that was key,” explained trainer Brian Meehan after collecting his second rosette of the week. “That never happened at Chester which, along with the track, was his undoing. Once he got the position, Sean was able to just take back and get a little breather. That man is riding out of his skin at the moment and it's so impressive the way he's riding. He knows the horse really well, as he comes in every week. Jayarebe is getting better and is still lightly raced. He's a superstar horse and he's on the up. I said to his owner that we wanted to explore an autumn campaign, with some international races, so we'll stick with the plan, although the [G1] Eclipse [at Sandown] is a possibility.”

Levey, still on a high after Rosallion's G1 St James's Palace Stakes victory earlier in the week, added, “Jayarebe has been doing all the right things at home, but Chester didn't suit him. He has a huge stride, I think it's something like 26-feet, which is a massive stride for a horse like this. We know he stays, I got a great break from [stall] 12 and I committed early because I knew he'd stay strong to the line. This week is about having the horses that have a chance of winning. They are so hard to find here because it's so competitive. When you have a horse and you know how good it is, and it's in the right race and doing everything right at home, then you can ride them with confidence. It comes across like I'm riding well, but I've had the horses this week. So far so good, two big chances have won and there are still more to come, so fingers crossed. I am delighted for Brian to get two on the board at Ascot. His horses are coming back into the fold, and he'll have nice ones to look forward to.”

King's Gambit's position appeared untenable turning for home, but he finished to great effect and just failed to pull off a last-to-first surge. “It looked like a disaster from furlong one and we were in the worst possible position on the round course,” commented Harry Charlton. “He's run monstrously well to get anywhere near them. You can see how good he is and we'll enjoy him down the line.”
